Wauseon High School, The University of Michigan, and the NFL are all venues where this 1963 graduate excelled and distinguished himself. While at Wauseon, Rick was an honor student as well as a 4-sport standout earning a total of 13 varsity letters. The quarterback on Wauseon's NWOAL championship team in 1962, Rick was named to the High School All-American team. At Michigan, he wore #49 in honor of his uncle, All-American Bob Chappius. Rick, a 3-year starter at defensive back, was named All-Big 10 in 1965 and 1966 and All-American in 1966. He graduated in 1968 with a degree in education and is also a member of the University of Michigan Hall of Fame. Picked in the second round of the NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts in 1967, he went on to be named All-Pro in 1968, 1970, and 1972. As a Colt, he played in Super Bowl III, losing to Joe Namath and the Jets 16-7, but he got his Super Bowl ring two years later in Super Bowl V, when the Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13.

After retiring from the NFL, Rick and his wife Charlene have resided in Baltimore where Rick has been a self-employed manufacturer's rep for over 35 years. The Volks raised three children, Eric, Brian, and Lauren, and now have 4 grandchildren.
